Where to Stand-Up Paddleboard in the BVI

January 25, 2024 | The Aerial, BVI

There are plenty of gorgeous places to enjoy a stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) adventure in the British Virgin Islands. Stand-up paddleboarding (also written “stand-up paddle boarding”) is a water sport that involves standing on a surfboard-like board and using a paddle to move across the water. Thanks to its stunning coastlines, curious cays, islets, and turquoise waters, the BVI is a paddleboarding paradise.

When deciding where to stand-up paddleboard in the BVI, it’s a good idea to research recommended paddleboarding spots beforehand. Some of the best paddleboarding places offer pristine conditions with flat waters and low winds. The sunny and clear skies provide great visibility for exploring this picturesque corner of the Caribbean.

1. Cane Garden Bay

Cane Garden Bay boasts a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere and is a popular spot for paddleboard yoga. Located on Tortola’s north shore, Cane Garden Bay is surrounded by lush green mountains and a white-sand beach lined with coconuts. You can paddle across calm waters and waves lapping against the shore. If you’re lucky, you may even glide past a sea turtle, pup sharks, and other fascinating marine life.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda

2. The Baths at Virgin Gorda

The Baths at Virgin Gorda is a fun destination for paddleboarders looking for adventure. Made up of enormous granite boulders that jut out of the sea like giants, The Baths offers a maze of hidden rock pools and mysterious caves. Suitable for all skill levels, The Baths at Virgin Gorda is a natural sea wonder that should not be missed.

3. Beef Island

If you crave a peaceful paddle, you may want to check out Beef Island. Here, you can meander through the island’s calm lagoon mangrove at one of the best spots in the BVI for a tranquil paddle. The lush mangroves along Hans Creek are a prime nursery habitat for many Caribbean reef fishes (p. 15). In addition to reef fishes, you may see pelicans and sting rays when paddling about. Beef Island’s calm and crystal-blue waters make it a worthwhile trip for novice and experienced paddlers alike.

4. Little Jost Van Dyke

Little Jost Van Dyke is an excellent place to paddleboard because of its relatively small size and lovely mangroves. This island is also ideal for SUP lovers to enjoy a calm watersport while taking in the breathtaking beauty of the BVI. Pelicans and baby sharks frequent the area, but so does wind, so it’s best to check the weather conditions before heading out on a paddleboard. Either way, both beginners and experienced paddlers will enjoy the charm of Little Jost Van Dyke.

5. Norman Island

With hidden coves and a picturesque coastline, Norman Island is a special place for paddleboarders to explore. Made famous for inspiring Treasure Island, a pirate novel by Robert Louis Stevenson, paddling around Norman Island feels like a fairy-tale destination. Here, you can explore hidden coves and mysterious seas on paddleboards, boat tours, or in a kayak. Rich in pirate history and legends, Norman Island is a popular SUP spot for those who crave adventure.

Tips For Finding the Best Paddleboarding Spot

Before heading out to explore the British Virgin Islands on your paddleboard, it’s important to determine your skill level. Figuring out your paddleboard level can help you choose a board that is suitable for you. Also, consider hiring an instructor or a guide if it’s your first time on the water with a paddleboard.

Some accommodation providers also offer paddleboarding lessons. For instance, at The Aerial, BVI, our luxury private island resort, we can curate an exciting experience if you want to try watersports like paddleboarding, scuba diving, and kitesurfing in the BVI. Accessible only by boat and reserved for guests at our health and wellness resort, we also offer eco-friendly ocean activities such as clear-bottom kayaking, snorkeling, and seabobbing.
